I am making a DIY racket for my child. I am also a poor parent. But my opinion is to made him a medium-low priced racket for him, like HKD700. When his skill is more mature or when he is really interested in this sports in long term, then make him a good racket specific to his strength. And as you said, the children do not really treasure their "toys".
