sports is a business. of course they needs to play well against China, but HK business should do more to help these HK kids to get to the next level. Sponsorship (money) and more exposure on the media will definitely motivate young players to play to their next level. Of course, these kids should have back-up plans in case they don't make it.
I know many people who used to play so well in matches are now either opened a TT store or became a coach.
